Hustle culture- this urge we have as a society to work harder, faster, stronger, & constantly be productive- is doing a lot more harm than good when it comes to your health.

Hustle mode keeps the body in fight or flight, steeping the body in stress hormones.

(OK, first before I hear some backlash on this- no stress doesn’t directly CAUSE infertility. And yes, infertility DOES cause stress)…

But stress, perfectionism…the hustle…is not helping hormone health and for some folks this eventually can impact the chances of getting pregnant.

When stress hormones are chronically high, we eventually see things like…

🚨Poor Sleep
🚨Mood Changes
🚨Premature aging
🚨Digestive issues
🚨Hormone Imbalances

These Hormone imbalances can include:

👉🏻Irregular cycles/irregular ovulation
👉🏻Low progesterone/luetal phase defects
👉🏻Severe PMS
👉🏻Trouble getting pregnant

I know first hand the effects of hustle culture. I’m a recovering Type A perfectionist who has a history of insomnia, anxiety, cystic acne, irregular cycles/PCOS, allergies and hypothyroidism…and magically all of these issues improve when I say to no the hustle 🤔

But how does one untangle themselves from hustle culture?

1. Take an inventory of priorities - what is truly important to you?
2. Define what your ideal life looks (not just the things you have or the title you’ve earned, but how do you desire to FEEL each day)- come back to this desired state daily
3. Limit your To Do list to mandatory only…like 1-3 items per day. I know, I know, this one was the HARDEST for me. But once I saw that the world and my success actually didn’t crumble, it was incredibly freeing!
4. Give yourself downtime
5. Rest as hard as you work

If you’re a hustle bug but you’re also trying to get pregnant, I challenge you to take a look at how you might even bringing the hustle along on the fertility journey (ie eating perfectly, meditating every day, taking ALL the supplements)…how’s all of this feeling for you?

November 2nd is World Fertility Day, a day to raise awareness for fertility issues, reduce stigma around the conversation and improve access to fertility care.

Some fertility facts:

* In the US, 1:8 couples are diagnosed with infertility
* The most common cause of infertility is failure to ovulate
* Only 19 states in the US have passed fertility insurance coverage laws, with only 13 of those including IVF coverage
* IVF success rates range based on age, but averages 50% live birth rate in women under 35

In my ideal world, all fertility patients would have access to open minded and brilliant reproductive endocrinologists, OBGYNs, naturopathic physicians, acupuncturists and dietitians.

I hope some day this becomes a reality. For now, it has to start with awareness education, and conversation.

I’ll do my best to keep showing up, sharing and advocating for my infertility patients!

🚩 for PCOS & Fertility

While tightening up my PCOS & Fertility Masterclass notes today, I thought, “ok time to jump on this 🚩 bandwagon!”

PCOS is the most common ovulatory disorder and cause of infertility and yet is still so misunderstood by many providers!

A large % of my practice is people with PCOS and I kid you not almost every single day I see one of these red flags come up!

The most common ones? Being told to eat less and exercise more or begin put on calorie restricted diets. Not only do these wreck havoc on metabolism, adrenals and thyroid—they can also affect the likelihood of regular ovulation occurring!

I also all too often see people being thrown on metformin as if its the holy grail of PCOS treatments, without any guidance on lifestyle factors that influence insulin resistance (and other underlying drivers of PCOS).

My last red flag is a bit less common but comes up often enough that I wanted to bring awareness to...using Clomid to induce ovulation can actually thin the uterine lining.

Some people with PCOS are already estrogen deficient (estrogen dominance in PCOS is a common misconception)…and building a healthy uterine lining for an embryo to implant is already a challenge! So a more holistic approach (that can still use ovulation induction) may be needed to get that lining nice and juicy!

Irregular cycles, especially cycles longer than 35 days, are a hallmark of PCOS.

🤔 What does this mean for our cysters?

🚩Irregular cycling means irregular ovulation of even anovulation (no ovulation at all).

🥚Irregular ovulation means it can be pretty damned hard to get pregnant. Having an anovulatory cycle would make natural conception impossible in that cycle.

📈Tracking ovulation when someone has PCOS can be tricky- the OPKs that everyone else is using are less likely to be reliable because the hormone they measure (LH) can be high ALL the time in someone with PCOS. Some companies, like Oova and Mira make more sensitive at home LH test kits. But we also have to learn other methods of cycle awareness like observing cervical fluid & watching basal body temperatures.

🥚How to ovulate more regularly?

This is going to depend on what factors are contributing to someone’s PCOS picture. Excess androgens are pretty much always part of the picture and can prevent proper communication from the brain to the ovaries, but we also have to address to following:

👉🏻Inflammation
👉🏻Insulin Resistance
👉🏻Stress
👉🏻Environmental toxins
👉🏻Poor sleep quality

Been offered meds like metformin without a conversation about all of the above?? Not alone there, but it’s not treating the root cause and there can be some unpleasant side effects (IYKYK 💩).
